Automotive Brake Pads Online
Brake pads play a very important role in your vehicle's disc brake system. They attach to the brake calipers, and press against the brake rotors to generate the friction you need in order to slow down or come to a stop.
How Brake Pads Work
It all begins with you pressing your foot against the brake pedal inside your cabin. That action leads the master brake cylinder to send hydraulic brake fluid to pistons inside the brake calipers. The mounting pressure compels the calipers to clamp the brake pads onto the rotors. The resistance created slows the rotation of your wheels. Press the brake pedal long enough or hard enough, and the wheels stop rolling completely.
Kinds of Brake Pads
Most cars and SUVs use organic brake pads, which are dependable, lower cost, and easiest on your rotors. Trucks typically feature either metallic or ceramic brake pads. Metallic pads are firmer and better able to manage heat, while ceramic brake pads are quieter and perform better on wet roads. Lastly, carbon fiber brake pads are most often found on sports cars and high-performance models.
How to Recognize Failing Brake Pads
Your brake pads will eventually wear down due to the heat and pressure from the act of braking. Signs of trouble include:
- Your brake pedal bounces or vibrates under your foot
- You notice aquealing, squeaking, or grinding sounds when you're braking
- It takes longer to stop
- It feels as though you need to "step" on the brake pedal to get the brakes to respond
- The dashboard light comes on
